On 23 July Gatwick Airport announced its plan for a second runway to the south (Crawley side) of the existing runway. This plan will be submitted to the Commission set up by the Government to consider the need for a new runway in the South East and to report on options. No decision will be taken before the General Election in 2015.
Proposals for changes at Gatwick have been effectively monitored, responded to and where necessary campaigned against for many years by the Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign (GACC). For a summary of the reasons why no new runway is needed in the South East and why not at Gatwick in particular click here and then click on their press release related to the 23 July announcement. The Liberal Democrats also believe that no new runway is needed in the South East. More detail can be found here.
