Lib Dems oppose 2nd Gatwick runway

by Mike Ward on 20 October, 2013

On 23rd July Gatwick Airport announced its plan for a second runway to the south of the existing one. This plan was submitted to the Government Commission looking into new runway capacity in the South East. (No decision will be made before the General Election in 2015).

However, new capacity may not be needed at all. Passenger numbers using Gatwick were expected to rise from 32 million a year in 2000 to 40 million in 2010 – but there are only 35 million so far. A second runway would be bad news for Mole Valley because:

  • ┬áNew flight paths from the proposed runway could mean more noise than at present.
  • An independent survey (for W.Sussex County Council and Gatwick Diamond) finds there could be a need for 30-40,000 new homes in the area to house the additional workforce needed for an expanded airport – that’s equivalent to another town the size of Crawley.
